Doctor and Master in Music by UFRJ, Marcello Gonçalves works in this institution as a 7 strings guitar teacher and coordinator of the strings area of the Extension Course. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he is a member of Trio Madeira Brasil and has a duo with clarinetist Anat Cohen, with whom he recorded the albums Reconvexo and Outra Coisa, nominated for a Grammy 2018. He has performed as a 7-string guitarist, musical director, arranger and/or producer with the artists: João Bosco, Ney Matogrosso, Roberta Sá and Chico Buarque. He has performed as a 7-string guitar soloist with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. His recordings with cavaquinho player Henrique Cazes explore the legacies of Pixinguinha and Garoto and his work with the group Rabo de Lagartixa sheds light on the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos. Marcello signs the musical production and the artistic direction of the album YV, by Yamandu Costa and Valter Silva. As musical director of the documentary on choro Brasileirinho, Gonçalves helped draw international attention to this Brazilian genre. Directed by the Finnish Mika Kaurismaki, the film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2005 and was shown in over 25 countries. The collaboration of Gonçalves' work with the Portuguese singer António Zambujo resulted in the nomination of the album Até Achei que fosse minha for the Latin Grammy Award.
