Maria José Chevitarese is Full Professor of Choral Singing at UFRJ. She develops works in the area of socio-cultural inclusion through choral singing and Brazilian choral music with a main focus on the 20th and 21st centuries. She received the PROEXT Cultura award from the Ministry of Education three times, for the project “A escola vai à ópera”, which aims to introduce children from public schools to the language of opera. She is the creator and conductor of Coral Infantil da UFRJ, created in 1989, which has performed in more than 30 productions of operas, cantatas, ballets and symphonic works at Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, and of the Brasil Ensemble-UFRJ choir, created in 1999, a group that is especially dedicated to Brazilian composers. The group has participated in the Biennials of Contemporary Brazilian Music, promoted by FUNARTE, having performed several world premieres.
